Are you looking for a small chocolate cake recipe from scratch?
This 9 inch chocolate cake recipe is absolutely amazing. It’s a very soft, moist cake that can be served with chocolate frosting or without frosting. You can decorate this small cake by simply dusting the top with powdered sugar if you want to forgo making the frosting.
With just my son and I in the the house I feel like it’s such a waste to make a 13×9 inch cake that we will only end up eating half of. The rest will go to neighbours, and that’s not a bad thing, we love sharing, but sometimes all you want is a good small chocolate cake. This cake is a small cake perfect for intimate small celebrations.
When to Use A Small Chocolate Cake Recipe:
- Small Anniversary Celebrations
- Valentines Day
- Small Birthday Parties
- Small dinner parties
- And the best reason of all: a just because cake
Let’s gather the ingredients for this 9 inch chocolate cake recipe and make it together.
Ingredients to Make a small chocolate cake recipe from scratch:
Cake Batter Ingredients:
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1/4 cup butter, softened
- 1 egg, room temperature
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 3 Tablespoons cocoa
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1 Teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 Teaspoon salt
- 1 Teaspoon baking soda
- 1 Teaspoon vanilla
Chocolate Frosting Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup (one stick) butter
- 2/3 cup cocoa
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1/3 cup milk
- 1 Teaspoon vanilla extract
We start our Small Chocolate Cake recipe by placing the boiled water and softened butter in a large bowl, beat the two ingredients together until the butter has melted. Add the egg and vanilla to the bowl and beat until the ingredients are well combined.
Place the flour, sugar. cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a medium size bowl. Stir the dry ingredients together to combine them. Add the dry ingredients to the bowl with the wet ingredients in it and beat them together with an electric mixer for 2 minutes.
Pour the cake batter into a greased 9 inch baking pan. If you don’t have a 9-inch baking pan for a small chocolate cake, check out any of the ones below!
Bake the cake in a 350 degree preheated oven for 25 – 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Remove the cake from the oven to a cooling rack to cool completely. While we’re waiting for the cake to cool, let’s make the frosting.
We start the frosting by melting 1/2 cup butter in a medium saucepan. After the butter has melted, stir the cocoa into the butter.
Alternately, add the powdered sugar and milk to the cocoa mixture in the bowl, beating the ingredients together to a spreading consistency. Add additional milk if needed to achieve the spreading consistency you desire. Stir the vanilla into the frosting.
Frost your completely cooled small chocolate cake with the homemade chocolate frosting.
Small Chocolate Cake recipe, it’s what’s for dessert for the two of you and it’s delicious!

Cant wait to bake delicious cakes and more. Thanks alot for this
YOur welcome Taeka!
I made this yesterday. Your recipe in the body of the blog is different than the recipe at the end of the blog. In the body of the blog there’s no mention of vanilla for the cake recipe and you list the baking soda as 1/2 teaspoon. In the recipe at the end of the blog you call for 1 teaspoon of vanilla and 1 teaspoon of soda. I caught the vanilla error, but not the baking soda error. My cake was very good. Not sure which is the correct version though. I love your recipes and the Hubby loved this cake last night. I would love to see more “downsized” dessert/baking recipes.
I fixed both of those errors Peggy, thank you for bringing them to my attention. After I made this cake I said the same thing. I need to make more smaller cakes. I’m going to be going on a recipe hunt for smaller cakes this year. It’s definitely something your going to see more of!
I’ll eagerly checking in looking for them!
This cake is super moist and delicious!!! I accide Used a half cup butter instead of a 1:4 cup melted butter. I almost Added more flour because I caught The mistake before I put the pan in oven but didn’t. I left it like original recipe. The cake was really delicious. I will Definitely make again and will continue to put the half cup butter. Try the recipe. You’ll be impressed!! Thank you!!!

I’ve used this recipe twice and it’s delicious. Can I leave the chocolate out and turn it into a yellow cake ?
I made this the other day, was so moist and delicious, thanks!
Omg this is the best and easiest cake I’ve ever made. I used 1/2 cup sugar and it was very good.
Wonderful Denise, thank you for taking the time to come back and comment, I appreciate you!
Way way sweet. Wonder if 1/2 cup sugar would be enough.

Delicious! This recipe is the perfect size as it’s just my husband and I also. I added some dark chocolate chunks through mine and no frosting needed. Thank you.
Wow! I was eating a chocolate cloud!! Ty so much for such a delicious and quick recipe! I was lazy and didn’t take out mixer, did it with my big hand wisk, and still super 👌!!
I tried this receipt for my husband’s 60th birthday. He loves chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. I can hold my own in the baking world but, my arch nemesis has always been chocolate cake. This recipe is very moist with rich chocolate flavor. It was the perfect size for a quarantine birthday celebration.
We are in the middle of the pandemic for COVID19…and we were really wanting something yummy. This is a great chocolate cake…I added chopped pecans on top. Great recipe…most everything is in your pantry/fridge🥰🥰
I made this cake for my son’s birthday and I used half of your homemade chocolate frosting recipe. My son loved his cake. My daughter has never liked chocolate cake, but she ate her whole entire slice today. Perfect size cake for a family of four especially when we have to celebrate birthdays during this time of social distancing. Thanks again.
Just finished making this tonight and it turned out perfect and simply delicious! II did have alot of leftover frosting (oh darn!) next time I might cut the frosting ingredients in half. Thanks for a easy and great small chocolate cake recipe.
I think this might be the best chocolate cake I’ve ever tasted. I made it with no changes or substitutions and made just the naked little cake, with no frosting at all, due to lacking some ingredients (stuck at home in covid quarantine!), and it was so moist and straightforward chocolatey! And stayed moist for several days. Delicious!
That is awesome Donna! So glad you enjoyed it. I love being able to make a small chocolate cake- makes portions easier in quarantine, LOL!
Delicious!
Thank you! I’m glad the small chocolate cake was good!
During this quarantine I’ve been watching a lot of baking shows and really wanted to make a chocolate cake. I know I didnt need a lot for me and the bf and this recipe was perfect for us! Super chocolaty and tasty! Definitely will make again. Thank you!
Small chocolate cakes are perfect for this time!
The best chocolate cake I have ever tasted!!!
Made it as a gift and now I need to make one to keep!!!
I love giving out small chocolate cakes as gifts! So hard to give away though haha!
I make this cake all the time. In fact I put all the dry ingredients in a pint size jar and keep it in the pantry. I even put the directions on the jar and give them as gifts, people love them. Best chocolate cake ever.
What a lovely gift and an amazing idea! I’m so glad you love the small chocolate cake so much!
Is cocoa powder the same as Hershey
Unsweetened cocoa powder? I would like to make this recipe, but not sure about this ingredient.
Its very good! However I was wondering if you have the carb count for the cake? I am type one diabetic and guessing the carbs can be dangerous. Its okay if not, 10/10 cake
