It’s also an easy recipe to make using a pouch of sugar cookie mix from the grocery store. That’s right, no measuring flour or any other ingredients that make up the cobbler topping, it’s all done for you when you use the already made cookie mix from the store. The only decision you have to make is what kind of baking apple you want to use for the recipe.
Why Do I Need To Use a Baking Apple in My Baked Desserts?
You would think that all apples are created equally as far as baking with them is concerned but unfortunately, they aren’t. When you’re craving a baked apple dessert, you need to use an apple that can stand the heat, literally. Eating apples break down in the oven and loose their flavor. Baking apples retain their shape and keep their flavor. Here’s a list of baking apples to consider when making this dessert:
- Braeburn
- Cortland
- Honey Gold
- Jonathon
- Fugi
- Gala
- Granny Smith
We’re going to gather the ingredients for Snickerdoodle Apple Cobbler and make it together. To make this easy and delicious recipe you’ll need:
Snickerdoodle Apple Cobbler Ingredients:
- One (17.5oz) pouch sugar cookie mix (Betty Crocker)
- 1/2 cup butter, room temperature
- 1 egg, room temperature
- 5 Teaspoons white sugar
- 3/4 Teaspoons cinnamon
- 10 cups apples, peeled and sliced
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 3 Tablespoons all purpose flour
- 1 Teaspoon cinnamon
- 2 Teaspoons lemon juice
We start the recipe for Snickerdoodle Apple Cobbler by first either spraying a 13×9 inch glass baking dish with cooking spray or greasing the dish with shortening. I never have cooking spray on hand, I always put a small amount of Crisco Shortening on a paper towel and rub the baking dish all over with it. Next, preheat the oven to 375 degrees and get that puppy up to temperature. Place the pouch of cookie dough mix, softened butter and egg in a large bowl. Stir the ingredients with a spoon to combine them and form a soft dough.
Next , place 5 Teaspoons of sugar and 3/4 Teaspoons of Cinnamon in a small bowl, mix the ingredients together until they are well combined. Set the mixture aside.
Place 10 cups of peeled and sliced apples in a large bowl. Add 1/2 cup white sugar,3 Tablespoons all purpose flour, 1 Teaspoon cinnamon and 2 Teaspoons lemon juice. Stir the ingredients together until the are well combined. Place the apples into your greased baking dish, spreading them out to fit the dish. Next we’re going to place the dough we made with the sugar cookie mix over the the apples. You can do this one of two ways. You can measure the dough out by tablespoonfuls and drop them over the apples evenly or take the dough in chunks and pat it out slightly and place it over the apples. Guess which one I chose to do? I wasn’t going to measure out tablespoons full , it was just so much easier to take pieces of the dough and flatten them out to put over the apples like patches. I’m such a rebel in the kitchen, LOL!
Place the baking dish in your preheated 375 degree oven and bake for 30 -34 minutes until the cookie dough top is golden brown and the fruit filling is bubbly. Take the Snickerdoodle Apple Cobbler from the oven and sit it on a wire rack to cool for 10 minutes, just enough time to get the ice cream out of the freezer and the bowls ready.
