French Onion Soup
Every spoonful of this traditional French Onion Soup was an absolute delight. Really kids, every spoonful. My son and I decided that this is the best we have ever eaten. The broth was amazing, and most important, at least to me, it’s seasoned perfectly.
First of all, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve ordered French Onion Soup in a restaurant and couldn’t finish it because the salty taste it left in my mouth did me in. No thank you! Even when they claimed it was “traditional French Onion Soup”, the salt was overbearing! This recipe allows you to enjoy the broth, onions cheese and croutons in every delicious spoonful. So make sure to save this, pin it, whatever it takes to make sure this is the true traditional French Onion Soup recipe that you use!
The ingredients of the traditional French Onion Soup
The ingredients that make up French Onion Soup are plentiful any time of the year. Also, they are inexpensive, which makes it a very affordable soup to serve your family. Who can say no to that? The ingredients are so easy to come by that in Roman times they considered French Onion Soup food for poor people. However, if this is what poor people ate, honey count me in, because this soup is fit for a king!
Our French onion soup was topped with homemade croutons and grated Swiss Cheese. A small Italian baguette made simple and delicious croutons. Cut the baguette into slices, butter both sides and broil both sides. Place them on top of the soup (use an oven proof bowl), smother them in grated Swiss Cheese and broil till the cheese melts. HEAVEN in a bowl!! French Onion Soup, you won’t find a better recipe than this, ENJOY!

My fiance loves onions and even though I don’t. I love to cook special things just for him. He would love this soup and it really does look incredible!
There’s nothing better than a good French onion soup, and yours looks amazing. Totally agree about the ones in restaurants being too salty (I suspect they use instant mixes).
Thank you Marc!
You are making me crave French Onion Soup. It’s one of my favorite things to order out – but I’ve not ever made it home before. Beautiful photos!

Thank you Jacque.
This looks so comforting and delicious! I can’t wait to try it!
Thank you Taylor
Love french onion soup. I agree , the stuff you get in restaurants is over the top salty. I make my croutons from left over crusty bread. I cut it to size, toss in some melted butter and a dash or so of olive oil, throw in some seasoning and bake in oven. Any left overs will keep in an airtight container for a few days. This recipe looks like a nice one to try. Love your site too.
Thank you Rochelle
I made your recipe today, I made a half batch and wish I would have made the whole recipe.
Best French onion soup ever. I made a crusty baguette to top with the cheese.
I will be making this again very soon. I was wondering can I use Bone beef broth in place of the regular beef broth?
I made this today and loved it and I used Bone Broth It was wonderful..
So glad you enjoyed the French Onion Soup! Definitely the time of year for that, right?
This turned out great! Followed recipe as written. Perfect for a cold evening!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it Peggy! Thanks for taking time to stop and comment.
Gross! 2 STICKS of butter is Wayyyyyy too much. Turned out horrible. Complete waste of food shamefully. DO NOT USE 2 STICKS OF BUTTER! Maybe 2tbsp?!?!
The people who have made the recipe and commented on how amazing it is disagree with you Sherig. it’s there in black and white. Sorry it wasn’t something you enjoyed but obviously because of the comments before your’s other people have.
I found the same unfortunately. Had high hopes but way too much butter that all rose to the top during simmer 😭
Glad other people enjoyed it but wasn’t my cup of tea, or bowl of soup.
