I grew up in Pennsylvania where the flavors of sweet and sour, thanks to the Amish influence in our food, runs through our veins. It is a unique taste that is perfect blend for the palette. This recipe for Classic cucumbers and onions is a great example of these flavors!
Not used to the Amish influence? There are many amazing Amish cookbooks to dive into so many great recipes.
Because of the Amish influence, I love recipes like cucumbers and onions, and I’ve gotten used to varying them to the exact way I like them. You can too!
I love recipes that can be varied to make it perfect for your liking, so this is why I love this cucumbers and onions recipe. This is a very “adjust to your taste” recipe. The vinegar and sugar in the recipe can be adjusted to your liking.
Definitely try it straight by the recipe for the first time (you may be surprised how much you like it as is!) but after that don’t be afraid to change it up! It is always easier to start by the recipe for cucumber and onions and then change it up versus adjusting it from the beginning.
Cucumber and Onions- Create it The Way You Like It!
If you like the dressing with a little more vinegar, add it. If it isn’t sweet enough for your tastes, add more sugar until it is. Or maybe you’re like me and you like both sweet and salty. For some of us, it may depend on the day! And that’s okay too.
The Dill in the recipe is also an option. I know not everyone is crazy about Dill. You can either put as much in the recipe as you want or leave it out altogether. I do recommend trying it with Dill the first time around though. Again, you may be surprised!
It’s all about your personal taste when it comes to the flavors of sweet and sour, find what works for you in this fantastic cucumbers and onions recipe.

Love homemade dressing? Me too! I feel like it makes a recipe fantastic!
Place the vinegar, water and sugar into a medium size bowl (I am obsessed with the bowls that come with the tops; I always use them for so many things beyond mixing!). Whisk the ingredients together until the sugar is dissolved.
Place the sliced cucumbers and onions (with Dill if you like) into a large bowl. Pour the dressing over the cucumbers and onions. Salt and pepper to your taste and cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate the bowl for at least 2 hours. After serving this delicious Summer treat, store any leftover cucumbers and onions in the bowl in the refrigerator wrapped with plastic.
