Banana Cake with Chocolate Frosting -The flavors of banana and chocolate for me, are a match made in heaven. The flavors alone are wonderful… together they make my mouth do a happy dance.
This delicious homemade cake is soft, moist and tender. Banana Cake with Chocolate Frosting also has a homemade frosting that is smooth and luscious. The two recipes combined are irresistible together. The first time I made this cake I made it for a family dinner as dessert. As my brothers, their wives and my mother sat eating the cake, I asked them if they liked it. They wouldn’t stop eating the cake so they replied by looking up and nodding their heads yes with full mouths. I can’t blame them, this is one amazing homemade cake. The flavors of banana and chocolate are one of my favorite flavor combinations. This is one irresistible treat and we’re going to make it together.
Banana Cake Batter Ingredients:
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking soda
- 1 pinch salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup white sugar
- 3/4 cup light brown sugar
- 2 eggs
- 4 ripe bananas, mashed
- 2/3 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
We start the recipe by preheating the oven to 350 degrees and greasing and flouring a 13x 9 inch baking pan. Place the flour, baking soda and salt in a medium bowl. Whisk the ingredients together and set them aside.
Place the butter, white sugar and brown sugar in a large bowl. Beat with an electric mixer until the ingredients are light and fluffy. Beat the eggs into the bowl one at a time, making sure that each egg you add is beaten into the batter well before adding the next one. Add the bananas to the bowl and beat the ingredients together until all the ingredients are well combined.
It’s time to add the flour ingredients we mixed together and set aside to the batter alternately with the buttermilk. When a recipe’s directions require you to do this always start with the flour and end with the flour. The first addition to the batter will be flour, beat the flour in until it’s just incorporated into the batter, next…
Add half the buttermilk to the batter beating until it’s just incorporated. Follow that with another batch of flour, then another batch of buttermilk and finally the last of batch of flour. With each addition of flour and buttermilk only beat the ingredients into the batter until they are just incorporated. The more you beat a batter after the flour has been added the more gluten you produce. The more gluten you produce the tougher the cake will be. Next…
After all the flour and buttermilk have been added to the batter alternately, mix the walnuts in with a spoon or spatula.
Place the batter into your greased and floured 13×9 inch baking pan. Bake the cake in your preheated 350 degree oven for 30 minutes, when the cake tests done with a toothpick inserted in the center that comes out clean, remove it from the oven. Place it on a damp tea towel to cool completely.
After the cake has cooled and it’s ready to frost, gather the Chocolate Frosting ingredients:
Chocolate Frosting Ingredients:
- half cup of butter
- 2/3 cup cocoa
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1/3 cup milk
- Teaspoon vanilla extract
Place the butter into a medium size saucepan under low heat. Melt the butter, after the butter is melted , stir in the cocoa. After the butter and cocoa are stirred together well ,add the powdered sugar to the pan alternately with the milk. Beat the two together until you have the spreading consistency you want. You can add a little milk, just a small amount at a time if you have to , to get the spreading consistency you desire. When the frosting is the consistency you want, stir in the vanilla and frost your cooled cake.
I could eat this with a spoon!!

- 2/3 cup cocoa
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1/3 cup milk, room temperature
- 1 Teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Cake Batter Instructions:Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 13x9 inch cake pan. In a small bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda and salt; set aside.In a large bowl, cream butter, white sugar and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Mix in the bananas. Add flour mixture alternately with the buttermilk to the creamed mixture. Stir in chopped walnuts. Pour batter into the prepared pans.Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. Remove from oven, and place on a damp tea towel to cool.
Chocolate Frosting Instructions:
- Melt the butter in a medium size saucepan. Stir in the cocoa. Alternately add powdered sugar and milk, beating to spreading consistency. Add small amounts of additional milk, if needed to get your desired spreading consistency.. Stir in vanilla. Recipe makes about 2 cups of chocolate frosting.

Oh how I love banana cake. Oh how I love banana anything! That frosting brought back memories. I used to make that often when I was younger and first learning to bake cakes. Looking at that photo I would say I need to revisit!
