We start this baked apple crumble recipe by making the topping
First, place the topping ingredients into a small bowl minus the oats.
- flour
- butter, cold and cubed
- brown sugar
- old fashioned oats
- cinnamon
- salt
Then, you will mix the flour, butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt together until well combined using a pastry blender. After that, add the oats to the bowl. Then, use your fingers and rub the oats into the mixture until they’re well combined. Finally, set the mixture aside while we prepare the apples. Are you already getting excited about this apple crumble recipe, kids? I know I am!
Next, we are going to talk about the apples in this apple crumble recipe
First of all, we’re going to talk about the apples, since we’re baking the apples you need to use apples specifically for baking. If you don’t use apples specifically for baking they won’t hold their shape after you’ve baked them. Eating apples have a tendency to turn to mush when baked so please use a baking apple. For this recipe, I used MacIntosh apples. They’re a great eating and baking apple, especially for this apple crumble recipe.
Cut 2 baking apples in half so you have 4 portions. Don’t lay the apples on their sides and cut them lengthwise. You want to cut them in the middle so you have the stem on one half and the bottom as the other half. Using a melon ball scooper, scoop out the core and seeds in all four apple halves. Rub the flesh on the inside of the apple with lemon juice. Place one Tablespoon of the jelly, jam or preserve of your choice into the hole you made in each apple half with the melon baller.
After that, once the jelly is in the hole of each half place the topping onto the top of each apple half covering the jam. Then, place the apple halves into a baking dish with about a 1/4 inch of water on the bottom of the dish. Bake for 35 – 40 minutes or until the apples are tender.
Single Serving Apple Crumble is delicious and so easy to make for an after dinner dessert, after school snack, or a “just because ” treat. A warm apple, with the jam, jelly, or preserve of your choice topped with a delicious crumble is comfort food, plain and simple comfort food. And you’re going to love it, ENJOY!
