Chocolate Cream Pie
My husband ,who is not one to crave chocolate, ate half the pie in one setting. I hate that he can do that and not gain an ounce. The chocolate filling nestled in an all butter crust and topped with a whipped topping is to die for.
I absolutely love being able to make recipes with what I’ve already got on hand in my pantry. After I made and baked the butter crust and let it cool, it was just a matter of making the filling. You can always use a premade pie crust from the store that you bake and cool according to the package directions.
The pie filling ingredients were already in my kitchen and pantry waiting to be made into a delicious homemade chocolate pie.
- cocoa
- cornstarch
- sweetened condensed milk
- egg yolks
- butter
- vanilla
- water
About the filling…
You’ll notice in the instructions for the filling that it says to cook until it’s thickened. Normally when I make a homemade filling it slowly thickens while it’s being cooked and then comes to a boil.
The filling ingredients weren’t in the pan under low heat very long before it started to thicken. It didn’t visibly come to a boil after it thickened, which is what I’m use to in a homemade filling. When it thickened and I realized it wasn’t going to boil I removed it from the heat and whisked in the butter and vanilla.
I’m going to guess here that using the sweetened condensed milk instead or regular milk is why the filling thickened as quickly as it did and didn’t need to boil.
The chocolate flavor is smooth and delightful, topped with either homemade whipping cream or a whipped topping Chocolate Cream Pie is definitely one delicious keeper, Enjoy!

I love to bake and this is right up my alley! I will be giving this a try this afternoon!
Hi Bunny,
I made your pie and followed the directions closely. I “cooked” the mixture on the stove until it thickened but was never really sure how thick it was supposed to be. After allowing it to chill in the fridge overnight, the pie never really concealed and had a soupy consistency. It was delicious, but we had to use a spoon. what did i do wrong??? thanks
mms
My filling thickened before it boiled when I made this. Normally when you make a pie filling you cook the mixture until it boils. Did yours boil at all?
This was delicious! I had to add a bit more cornstarch however as the chocolate mixture hardly thickened. That seemed to do the trick as it thickened up to a pudding consistency shortly after whisking in the extra cornstarch.
I just made this with an almond flour crust (which tastes just like Graham cracker crust to me and is keto) I added the butter and vanilla before I cooked it not realizing I was supposed to add it after it cooked. I thought I ruined it but it came out perfect!!! Took a long long time to boil but I kept at it and it did indeed thicken just before it boiled. Great recipe, thank you so much for sharing!
