Sauteed Red Cabbage
I never really thought about Red Cabbage recipes until my neighbour grew it in the garden one year and gifted me with some. When you’ve got five or six heads of Red Cabbage waiting for you in the fridge you better get your butt in gear and figure out what your going to do with it.
In that situation, necessity is definitely the mother of invention. My first thought to use it was making Sautéed Red Cabbage, my second thought was…How do I preserve the other heads of cabbage to use at a later date? After all, I really didn’t want to eat red cabbage every day for a month straight!

After doing some research on line I found out I had two options for preserving cabbage. I could freeze it or can it. I don’t have any available shelf space to store canned foods but we do have a nice big freezer so the the decision to freeze my cabbage was easy. Sauteed Red Cabbage Ingredients:
- 8 Slices thick bacon, cut into pieces
- 1 cup onion, sliced thin
- 2 Tablespoons dark brown sugar
- 2 Tablespoons Dijon Mustard
- 1/4 cup Apple Cider Vinegar
- 1 cup Chicken Broth
- 8 cups shredded red cabbage
- salt and pepper to taste
We start this delicious recipe by frying 8 slices of bacon in a Dutch Oven until it’s almost cooked. Add the sliced onions to the pan and cook until the onion starts to get slightly browned. Add the 8 cups of shredded red cabbage to the pan and stir the cabbage until it’s coated with bacon grease. Cook the cabbage until it begins to wilt.
Stir the brown sugar, Dijon Mustard and apple cider into the wilted cabbage. Toss the wilted cabbage in the pan to thoroughly incorporated the ingredients.
Add the chicken broth to the pan along with the salt and pepper to taste. Bring the mixture up to a simmer, cover the pan with a lid and turn the heat down to a simmer. Simmer the cabbage for 45 minutes or until soft with a little liquid in the pan.

Sauteed Red Cabbage
Ingredients
- 8 slices thick bacon cut into pieces
- 1 cup onion sliced thin
- 2 Tablespoons dark brown sugar
- 2 Tablespoons Dijon Mustard
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1 cup chicken broth
- 8 cups shredded red cabbage
- salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a large skillet or dutch oven fry the bacon until it's almost cooked. Add the sliced onion and cook until the onion is starting to get slightly browned.
- Add the shredded cabbage, stir to coat the cabbage with bacon fat. Cook cabbage until it begins to wilt.
- Stir in the brown sugar,Dijon mustard and apple cider vinegar. Toss to combine thoroughly with the cabbage. Add the chicken broth. Salt and pepper to your taste. Bring the mixture up to a simmer, cover with a lid and turn the heat down to simmer the cabbage for 45 minutes or until soft with a little liquid in the pan. Serve immediately.

We use red cabbage in cold dishes all the time. Never thought of sauteing it. This sounds wonderful.
