Pennsylvania Dutch Hot Bacon Dressing
We’re going Dutch today with the flavors of sweet and sour in a Pennsylvania Dutch Hot Bacon Dressing. Pennsylvanians love the flavor of sweet and sour that have been given to us by the Mennonite and Amish communities known as Pennsylvania Dutch.
Pennsylvania Dutch Hot Bacon Dressing
To start the recipe dice up five slices of bacon, pan fry until done. Remove the diced bacon from the fry pan to a bowl, place the drippings in a small bowl and set aside to use in the recipe.
Whisk the eggs, salt, pepper and sugar together in a medium bowl.
While you continue to whisk, add the vinegar and water to the egg mixture. Whisk until well incorporated.
Place the mixture into a saucepan under medium heat. Add the bacon and bacon drippings to the saucepan, whisk to combine. Cook over medium heat until the mixture comes to a boil, reduce the heat and let it simmer to the thickness you desire. When it’s as thick as you want it, remove the dressing from the pan to a bowl.
Pennsylvania Dutch Bacon Dressing can be served from a bowl on the table to allow your family to add the amount they desire themselves or served with the dressing already mixed into the greens ahead of time.
- dandelion greens
- fresh spinach
- mixed greens
- boiled potatoes
I hope you enjoy this taste of Pennsylvania Dutch as much as we do! Enjoy!

Thank you Marye!
Thank you so much for this recipe. My mom used to make this on holidays and for guests. I haven’t had it in 30 years, and this is just the way I remember it. Thank you! Now if I can just find a decent scrapple recipe, my search for childhood food will be complete.
Your welcome Jennie! I’ve tried to explain Scrapple to my Texas husband. He just doesn’t get it. On my next trip home to Pa. I’m going to have to get some for him to try!

I made this recently and sorry to say, not as good as expected. I do, however, have a recipe for German Potato Salad (dressing) that is so much better. Will stick to it. Thanks anyway.
That’s the beauty of recipes Luce, we all have our favorites. Would you like to share yours with us?
My mother used to make a warm dressing for her German potato salad but unfortunately I do not have it since she passed. Is there anyway you could share your recipe?
Replace the water with milk

This sounds like a luscious dressing. We love a good bacon dressing, but I’ve never heard of making it with egg before, so I’m excited to try your recipe.
Bacon in a dressing?! Sign me up!! This looks wonderful, I’ve never actually added bacon to a dressing before and now I’m wondering why that is!!!!
You had me at bacon! Mmm! Can’t wait to try your recipe!

Oh wow – this sounds amazing! I love the idea of using it over potatoes and I’ve actually been making some salads with potatoes that I bet this dressing would be great on!
This dressing reminds me of the kind my sweet MIL used to make. She would add it to just about everything because they loved bacon. I know that I really like it on sautéed cabbage. The dressing perked it up. I’m glad you posted it because I didn’t get the recipe from my MIL.
I think I could be happy just slurping this dressing with a spoon, no green needed!
A warm bacon dressing sounds like an ideal topping for many salads. This home made dressing would disappear quickly!
This dressing sounds amazing! i’ve never tried a hot dressing before – will definitely have to try.
This sounds so good! Would the eggs curdle when heated? Or does the vinegar ensure they don’t? I’d like to try this out sometime.
No Shinta, the eggs don’t curdle, it actually helps thicken the dressing. I hope you try it, would love to know what you think!
