Pennsylvania Dutch Hot Bacon Dressing
We’re going Dutch today with the flavors of sweet and sour in a Pennsylvania Dutch Hot Bacon Dressing. Pennsylvanians love the flavor of sweet and sour that have been given to us by the Mennonite and Amish communities known as Pennsylvania Dutch.
Pennsylvania Dutch Hot Bacon Dressing
To start the recipe dice up five slices of bacon, pan fry until done. Remove the diced bacon from the fry pan to a bowl, place the drippings in a small bowl and set aside to use in the recipe.
Whisk the eggs, salt, pepper and sugar together in a medium bowl.
While you continue to whisk, add the vinegar and water to the egg mixture. Whisk until well incorporated.
Place the mixture into a saucepan under medium heat. Add the bacon and bacon drippings to the saucepan, whisk to combine. Cook over medium heat until the mixture comes to a boil, reduce the heat and let it simmer to the thickness you desire. When it’s as thick as you want it, remove the dressing from the pan to a bowl.
Pennsylvania Dutch Bacon Dressing can be served from a bowl on the table to allow your family to add the amount they desire themselves or served with the dressing already mixed into the greens ahead of time.
- dandelion greens
- fresh spinach
- mixed greens
- boiled potatoes
I hope you enjoy this taste of Pennsylvania Dutch as much as we do! Enjoy!

I’ve been trying to find the recipe for dressing my grandmother put over lettuce it was made in a frying pan and started out with bacon drippings, sugar vinegar I was sure she put flour or something in there too. Do you know where I’m going with this? Never got it written down but I loved it. Can you help. She was from Pennsylvania and was Dutch.

Lv it. Try it no fail
Thank you!
This sounds just like my grandmother’s (in-law) recipe. Except, like Brenda, she started w an iron skillet. The curly endive or dandelion greens fresh fr her yard were put in pan as well. Allowed to wilt a bit then served hot. Of course the recipe was lost sometime after her passing. I’m absolutely trying this one this weekend. (But with a “keto” spin). I want to make it right now!! Thank you!!
Thank you Shevaun
I’ve been eating this since I was a kid. I’m now 63.
Thank you David
Just made this for the first time for the family. It was so good and fresh. Everyone in the family loved it which isn’t always the case with a family of 5. Pretty easy to make . Will definitely keep this dish on the permanent weekly menu.
Thank you Joyce!
I love this recipe but I did make one change using red wine vinegar gives it a wonderful flavor much better than the other vinegars.
Oh my gosh Julia that sounds amazing!! Now I have to try it. I would love to know what it tastes like! Thank you for your version!
Spent MANY childhood hours harvesting dandelions. Wasn’t a fan of their bitterness, so I had my dressing on lettuce. Grandma and Mom only used apple cider vinegar, so I never contemplated white or red wine vinegar. Might have to

Hi! I’m originally from Lancaster,PA , the home of PA DUTCH and there are lots of look alike recipes on Pinterest. However, this one is the real deal!! No flour used for thickening !!! That’s just wrong! 😆😆 It’s amazing with iceberg, boiled potato cubes n hard boiled egg!!! 😋😋 Good eats!!
I can’t even imagine using flour to thicken the dressing. I think that would ruin the flavour of it. It’s perfect letting the eggs thicken the dressing. I’m from Sunbury Pa, not to far from Lancaster!
This is the closest recipe I have found yet. Thank you. Grandma’s recipe is long gone. I am from Milton, Pa. Small world.
It certainly is a small world Cherie! I’m from Sunbury, Pa. Very close to you! Thank you for taking the time to come visit me and comment . I appreciate it!
