Crock Pot Apple Pudding Cake
I am absolutely amazed that I made this apple pudding cake in the crock pot. Good Grief this is good! Where do I start… Warm apples topped with cinnamon, a fluffy cake with a thick pudding flavoured with orange; this is absolutely one of the best recipes for apple crock pot cake EVER!. The batter for the cake goes on the bottom of the crock pot and actually rises up to make a soft, fluffy cake. The pudding portion appears when you scoop out the cake and apples.
It has a slight citrus flavour from the orange juice that pairs so well with the apples. Just imagine… warm apples, cinnamon, and an orange flavour altogether. It’s enough to make you swoon. You could pair this with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and make it insanely luscious. Let’s gather the ingredients and make this crock pot cake recipe together.

Crock Pot Apple Pudding Cake
Ingredients
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 2/3 cup plus 1/4 cup sugar divided
- 3 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup butter cold
- 1 cup milk
- 4 apples I used Gala Apples, peeled and diced
- 1 1/2 cups orange juice
- 1/2 cup honey or light brown sugar
- 2 Tablespoons butter melted
- 1 Teaspoon cinnamon
Instructions
- Combine the flour,2/3 cup sugar, baking powder and salt in a large bowl. Cut the butter into the mixture until you have coarse crumbs.
- Stir the milk into the crumbs just until moistened.
- Grease the bottom and sides of a 4 or 5 qt crock pot. Spoon the batter into the bottom of the crock pot and spread out evenly. Place the diced apples over the batter evenly.
- In a medium size bowl, whisk together the orange juice, honey, melted butter , remaining sugar and cinnamon. Pour over the apples.
- Place a clean kitchen towel over the opening of the crock pot, place the lid on. This keeps condensation from the lid from going into the crock pot. Set the crock pot on high and cook 2 to 3 hours until apples are tender.
- Serve warm.

Just mixed everything together for this have to say mixing the honey, Oranage juice and cinnemon together looked a bit strange and I’ve just realsied Ive not added any Salt…DOH but I’ll wait 3 hours and see how it goes !!
It should still be fantastic Clare.
Hi, if i have an 8 quart crock pot could i double the recipe; and if so will cooking time increase ?
Thank you so much in advance!
Mariell yes the baking time will increase because it’ll be a thicker cake doubled up. I really don’t know how much longer it would bake, check it after the time is up for the original recipe and keep checking at half hour intervals.
Reminds me of those cake and pudding mixes, this is healthier though!
It’s delicious Tricia!
Just made this, and it turned out just like the photo! Very delicious and will be brought to a Christmas get-together! It reminds me of an apple cobbler or bread pudding. I lightly stirred the dough with the apples before pouring into the crock pot, and still had success. I didn’t have enough honey, so used a 1/4 cup of honey and a 1/4 cup of apple butter. I cooked on high heat for 1 hour and low for 2.5 hours, then turned it off and let it air out and cool down/thicken up for awhile. Really easy, and it looks and tastes amazing! Thanks!
Wonderful Michele!
I have a 5-6 quart crock pot. Do you think the cake would be too thin? should I double it?
You could double it and cook slightly longer Pat.
Hi Bunny my pud is in the slow cooker so I’m hoping it’s going be a good dessert. We love apple pud of any kind. I live in South Africa and se the Granny Smith apples as they bring down the GI . Certainly sounds nice. Did you use all the milk?
Thank you for sharing your recipe!
Yes Judith I used the milk in the recipe, you’ll love this one!
We loved it so did our guests! It was just as nice the next day with a 40 seconds warm up in the microwave . Thanks again!
Last year I made it for the Super Bowl, one man who had it, Still talks about how good it was!
Hi bunny, I really want to try this recipe but I don’t have a crock pot, can I bake the pudding? If I can how long would it be? Thank you 🙂
You can definitely bake the pudding in your oven Maharni. Here’s a post about converting a crock pot recipe to make it in the oven. http://www.livestrong.com/article/469882-how-to-convert-crock-pot-cook-time-to-oven-cook-time/ Please come back and tell me how it went for you, I’d love to know.
I tried the recipe last night using my mom rice cooker, after one and a half hour, we started to smell burnt food so I turned off the rice cooker and went to sleep, I thought I had burnt the pudding, but this morning my mom said the pudding was fine, it did burnt but only the part that stick to the pot. We loves it. I am going to try the recipe using the oven. Thank you for sharing the recipe Bunny ^_^
Thank you for coming back to tell me Maharani! Let me know how it works in the oven for you!
I made this today and it is EXCELLENT. So easy and it made a nice bit of syrup at the bottom of the crock pot to drizzle over the top. I wouldn’t alter the recipe at all except maybe I would try brown sugar instead of white only as a preference. This recipe is a true keeper. I can’t wait for my husband to get home and try it.
Cindy I loved the sauce!! And I couldn’t beliece how fluffy the cake portion was for making it in the crock pot! Thanks for coming back to tell me you made it!
This was a great recipe. We have to watch the sugar in our house so I used stevia cup for cup but used only 1/2 of what was called for then used brown sugar (sugar free ) I also used 1 cup of oatmeal flour It turned out great thank you for a great recipe. Also used brown sugar in orange juice mixture.
Your welcome Patricia!! I’m so glad you made it, your adaptions sound great!
I had some peaches that were ripening faster than i could eat them and since its abnormally hot here for this tme of year I was not about to put the oven on. I remembered that I had pinned this recipe and decided to swap out the apples for the peaches. I was a bit leery since peaches are as a rule softer and juicier than apples but I have to say it came out AMAZING! The orange juice seemed to enhance the flavor of the peaches wonderfully! And considering it doesn’t seem like a lot of ingredients my crock pot was 3/4 full – and its a 5 quart size! I will definitely use this recipe again – with the apples of course – and who knows, Im sure it would turn out great with the raspberries and blackberries that grow like crazy in my garden! Thanks!
Jane what a great substitution for the apples!! I bet it was magnificent! Let me know if you use the berries too!
Hi Bunny, Do you think I could use peaches instead of apples?
Colleen I don’t see why not. peaches sounds great. I’d drain them first though if they are fresh peaches just to make sure there’s not more liquid than needed. Let me know how it works out!
Have got to tell you that this recipe is the best ever. Made it on a whim and everyone who has tasted it loved it. Making it again for Thanksgiving.
For those comments above regarding the OJ usage, cut the citric flavor by adding some apple sauce.
I used almond milk instead of milk and Earth Balance “butter” instead of butter to make it vegan and it turned out amazing! Also, a friendly tip to anyone out there who’s interested, Earth Balance butter is just as good as butter. You can literally not taste the difference and it is waaaay better tasting then margarine. I just wanted to put that out there because I was so hesitant to buy it at first and always bought vegan Becel which is meh, but I am so glad I did. Just sharing in case there are any vegan-curious folks out there that are looking for an all-natural animal friendly substitute 🙂
Thanks for the recipe!
Thank you for sharing this recipe, it was lovely especially with using apples from my own garden, I substituted milk for coconut milk and the butter for a vegetable spread and it was fine. I found the sauce at the bottom of the dish was gorgeous and will be making this dish many more times.
Oh how I loved the sauce on the bottom Mandy, you’re right it truly is gorgeous!
this looks and reads delicious! Can’t wait to try it soon.. Can I also make it in a pot on stove-top?
Thanks for sharing!
I have never made it that way Ashima, If you try it come back and tell me about it!
