Crock Pot Apple Pudding Cake
I am absolutely amazed that I made this apple pudding cake in the crock pot. Good Grief this is good! Where do I start… Warm apples topped with cinnamon, a fluffy cake with a thick pudding flavoured with orange; this is absolutely one of the best recipes for apple crock pot cake EVER!. The batter for the cake goes on the bottom of the crock pot and actually rises up to make a soft, fluffy cake. The pudding portion appears when you scoop out the cake and apples.
It has a slight citrus flavour from the orange juice that pairs so well with the apples. Just imagine… warm apples, cinnamon, and an orange flavour altogether. It’s enough to make you swoon. You could pair this with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and make it insanely luscious. Let’s gather the ingredients and make this crock pot cake recipe together.

Crock Pot Apple Pudding Cake
Ingredients
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 2/3 cup plus 1/4 cup sugar divided
- 3 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup butter cold
- 1 cup milk
- 4 apples I used Gala Apples, peeled and diced
- 1 1/2 cups orange juice
- 1/2 cup honey or light brown sugar
- 2 Tablespoons butter melted
- 1 Teaspoon cinnamon
Instructions
- Combine the flour,2/3 cup sugar, baking powder and salt in a large bowl. Cut the butter into the mixture until you have coarse crumbs.
- Stir the milk into the crumbs just until moistened.
- Grease the bottom and sides of a 4 or 5 qt crock pot. Spoon the batter into the bottom of the crock pot and spread out evenly. Place the diced apples over the batter evenly.
- In a medium size bowl, whisk together the orange juice, honey, melted butter , remaining sugar and cinnamon. Pour over the apples.
- Place a clean kitchen towel over the opening of the crock pot, place the lid on. This keeps condensation from the lid from going into the crock pot. Set the crock pot on high and cook 2 to 3 hours until apples are tender.
- Serve warm.

Could you use apple juice or apple cider instead of orange juice?
Connie, I’m sure you could use apple juice . I haven’t done it but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work.
Thank you! I can’t wait to try it!
You’re welcome Connie, thank you for stopping by!
Can u use a can of apple pie filling instead of fresh apples.
It’s made with fresh apples Tammy, that’s all I’ve ever used so I don’t know what it would be like with canned. But if you do use canned I’d drain all the liquid from the apples because the recipe has liquid of its own to put in with the fresh apples.
Recipe question:
What do we do with the extra 1/4 cup of sugar that is called for at the beginning?
Mary it goes into the bowl with the orange juice, honey, cinnamon and melted butter. I just fixed the recipe.! Thanks for pointing it out.
Oh! I added it at the 2 hour point. Hope that wasn’t a wrong move. I checked to see if the apples were soft and when I figured it needs that extra hour I sprinkled the sugar on top. Only time will tell!
It’ll be fine Mary, you’ll love it!
Hm-mm-mm!! I can smell this just by looking at the photo. The perfect dessert for this evening.
Susie it was sooo good! Thank you for stopping by!

Is this for a round or an oval crock pot? I just have a cheapie round one that I have used successfully.
Sandra I have a round crock pot to it’s a 3 or 4 qt that i made this in.. Mine was cheap. Had it for years!
Does the orange juice over power the apple taste?
Patty no it doesn’t, it adds a very nice flavor to the pudding portion of the cake.
Had to try it now!! Who cares I can’t eat it till 10pm. 🙂
It’s 10pm here Patty! Let me know what you think!!
Hi Bunny with the flour is that plain flour or self raising flour? I am thinking all purpose might be the same as our plain flour in Australia?
regards
Debbie
Hi Debbie, yes just plain flour. Let me know how you like the recipe!
I tossed some toasted coconut on top. It was a nice little addition to a fabulous recipe!
Hi Mary! Oh the coconut addition sounds wonderful!!
Hi Bunny, I am assuming you cook on low? Thanks can’t wait to try!
Sorry Kristine, yes cook on low!
The recipe says to cook on high?
Yes Mary, but if you have an older crock pot they usually run hotter so I’d go with low. But otherwise it worked fine for me on high. It cooks for 2-3 hrs , just keep an eye on it after 2 hours, it may not need to go to 3 hrs.
Hi can I use a white or yellow cake mix instead of the flour mixture?
Carol I’ve never made it that way, as a matter of fact this is the first cake I’ve ever made in the crock pot. I can’t tell you what using a cake mix would do to the final product.
I’ve never made anything sweet in my crockpot, but I think it is past time to do it. This recipe looks and sounds so good.
it ‘s wonderful Linda, if you make it, please come back and tell me how it went!
