Banana Walnut Bars with Cream Cheese Frosting are made moist and soft by the sour cream in the batter. The flavors of banana and walnut dance around in your mouth while the cream cheese frosting adds luscious creaminess to each bite. After my son tasted these delicious bars he said….”I like these waaayy too much!” I couldn’t have said it better myself. If you are going to make banana bars, this is the best way to go.
We start the recipe by gathering the ingredients to make Banana Walnut Bars with Cream Cheese Frosting.
Banana Bars Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups white sugar
- 2 eggs, room temperature
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 Teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 Teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 Teaspoon salt
- 3 small bananas ( about 1 cup mashed bananas)
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
Place the butter and sugar into a large bowl. Using an electric mixer, beat the ingredients until they are light and fluffy. Add the eggs, sour cream and vanilla to the bowl and beat until everything is well combined.
Combine the flour, baking soda and salt into a medium bowl, stir the ingredients together to combine them. Gradually add the flour mixture to the creamed mixture, beating with an electric mixer until the flour is just incorporated into the batter.
Add the mashed bananas and walnuts to the bowl, stir with a large spoon until they are evenly distributed in the batter. These banana bars are going to be fantastic!
Spread the batter into a greased jelly roll pan. Bake the bars at 350 degrees for 20 -25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Do not over bake the banana bars. Cool the bars completely on a wire rack.
There it is- banana bars! Now that our banana walnut bars are made and cooled it’s time to make the Cream Cheese Frosting.
Cream Cheese Frosting Ingredients:
- 1 eight ounce package cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 2 Teaspoons vanilla extract
- 3 3/4 – 4 cups confectioners sugar
Beat the cream cheese, butter, and vanilla in a large bowl until fluffy. Gradually beat in enough confectioners sugar to achieve your preferred spreading consistency. You may not use all the confectioner’s sugar listed in the recipe. It just depends on how stiff you want the frosting to be.
Spread the creamed cheese frosting onto the bars and sprinkle with crushed walnuts to decorate if you like.

Ingredients

- 1 cup (3 small very ripe bananas)
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
Cream Cheese Frosting
- 1 eight ounce package cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 2 Teaspoons vanilla extract
- 3-3/4 - 4 cups confectioners sugar
Instructions
- Place the butter and sugar into a large bowl. Beat with a mixer until the ingredients are creamy, light and fluffy. Add the eggs, sour cream and vanilla to the bowl, beat with a mixer until well incorporated. Combine the flour, baking soda and salt in a medium bowl, stir to combine. Gradually add the flour mixture to the batter, beating until the flour mixture is just incorporated. Stir in the mashed bananas. Spread the batter into a greased jelly roll pan.
