Apple Pan Dowdy – this delicious apple dessert ROCKS!
Apple Pan Dowdy ranks up there as being one of the best apple desserts I’ve ever made. You would be hard pressed to find anything that tastes as good as this does warm with ice cream on it. The first thing your going to make is the sauce, which only takes about ten minutes to cook on the stove.
After the sauce is made, the rest of the recipe comes together quickly. It’s just a matter of peeling, coring and slicing the apples, putting them in the buttered baking dish and sprinkling cinnamon sugar over them. The Bisquick topping takes two minutes to mix and drop onto the apples. The entire top of the dessert is covered in the sauce and then baked. It comes out of the oven with a fluffy Bisquick cake like top over the apples with a gooey (and I mean that in a good way) brown sugar glaze underneath. But enough talking about this apple dessert, let’s gather the ingredients and make it together.
Apple Pan Dowdy Ingredients:
- 1 3/4 cups Bisquick, divided
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 Teaspoon salt
- 1 Teaspoon white vinegar
- 1 cup water
- 1 Tablespoon butter, softened
- 1 Teaspoon vanilla
- 5 or 6 Baking apples
- 3/4 cup cream
Cinnamon Sugar
- 2 1/2 Tablespoons white sugar
- 1/2 Teaspoon cinnamon
We start the recipe by preheating the oven to 400 degrees and buttering an eight inch square baking pan.
Combine 1/4 cup Bisquick, the brown sugar, salt, vinegar and water in a medium size saucepan. Place the pan over low heat, cook and stir the ingredients until they are thick and clear, about 10 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and whisk in the butter and vanilla. Set the mixture aside.
Place the apples into a buttered 8 inch pan. Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture evenly over the apples in the pan.
Place the remaining 1 1/2 cups of Bisquick and cream in a large bowl. Use a fork to combine the two together. Drop the mixture over the apples in the pan evenly. Pour the sauce over the Bisquick topping evenly. Place the pan in a preheated 400 degree oven for 30 -40 minutes. Before removing the pan from the oven, check to see if the apples are tender by sticking a fork down into the pan. If the apples are tender and cooked, remove the pan from the oven to a cooling rack.
If you have as much patience as I do, you’ll have the vanilla ice cream ready and a spoon in your hand. Apple Pan Dowdy, keep the recipe close by, you’ll be making it a lot. ENJOY!

This looks and sounds so very good, one thing that I’d like to ask is what is bisquick? I’m in Australia and have never heard of this before. do you know what I could do to substitute it please. Love your site, Thanks for the wonderful recipes, if you have any that are Vegan and yummy please put them up I’d love to get your inventions.
Hi Cathee, I looked up a homemade recipe for Bisqiuck just incase you can’t have find it in the stores where you are. Here’s a definition of what Bisquick is with the recipe…. Best Answer: Bisquick is base mix that can be used for an assortment of recipes from making biscuits to waffles, pancakes, casserole toppings. Below is a recipe for what is known as a MASTER MIX. It can be used in any recipe that calls for Bisquick.
Bisquick is quick because it’s already premixed for you and you don’t have to go thru the time of mixing the individual ingredients.
MASTERMIX RECIPE
8 cups unsifted enriched flour (spoon lightly into cup and level off)
1/3 cup double-acting baking powder
3 TBSP. granulated sugar
1 TBsp. iodized salt
1-1/3 cups nonfat dry milk powder
1-1/3 cups solid white vegetable shortening (like crisco)
Into a lg. bowl, sift together 4 cups of the flour, the baking powder, sugar and salt. This removes lumps and helps mix ingredients.
Stir in the dry milk.
Cut in shortening with 2 knives, pastry blender, or fingers until it looks like coarse cornmeal.
Sift in remaining 4 cups of flour; stir well.
Store in covered container at room temperature.
I remember the song my mum taught me, “shoo fly pie and apple pan dowdy pakes your eyes light up and your tummy say howdy.” I have made a sugar pie or shoo fly pie as they were called but never an apple pan dowdy, this looks yum. Thanks for posting.
You’re welcome Teresa!
Oh my Nina you’ve peaked my curiosity! I’ll look around and see what I can come up with but if you find it before I do LET ME KNOW! It sounds delicious!
Since I’m stuck in the house after the storm, I’m looking for something yummy to make. Your site has got me covered! Thanks!!
This looks yummy. Can you use milk instead of the cream?
Hi Diane, I used the cream, if you use milk which is thinner it will change the thickness of the batter slightly but you can try it and let me know what happens.
I don’t like the taste of Bisquick. Do you think I could use Jiffy mix instead?
I don’t think the brand matters Melissa as long as it’s a baking mix like Bisquick.
My sauce isn’t thickening – anyone else have this issue? And it’s not clear. Help!
Kelly are you heating it under low heat? it should cook slowly and come up to a boil and thicken. Is that what your doing?
I LOVE this recipe! I’m 54 years and never heard of it before! So yummy with all that caramel! I have it in the oven now.
