Crock Pot Apple Pudding Cake
I am absolutely amazed that I made this apple pudding cake in the crock pot. Good Grief this is good! Where do I start… Warm apples topped with cinnamon, a fluffy cake with a thick pudding flavoured with orange; this is absolutely one of the best recipes for apple crock pot cake EVER!. The batter for the cake goes on the bottom of the crock pot and actually rises up to make a soft, fluffy cake. The pudding portion appears when you scoop out the cake and apples.
It has a slight citrus flavour from the orange juice that pairs so well with the apples. Just imagine… warm apples, cinnamon, and an orange flavour altogether. It’s enough to make you swoon. You could pair this with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and make it insanely luscious. Let’s gather the ingredients and make this crock pot cake recipe together.

Crock Pot Apple Pudding Cake
Ingredients
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 2/3 cup plus 1/4 cup sugar divided
- 3 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup butter cold
- 1 cup milk
- 4 apples I used Gala Apples, peeled and diced
- 1 1/2 cups orange juice
- 1/2 cup honey or light brown sugar
- 2 Tablespoons butter melted
- 1 Teaspoon cinnamon
Instructions
- Combine the flour,2/3 cup sugar, baking powder and salt in a large bowl. Cut the butter into the mixture until you have coarse crumbs.
- Stir the milk into the crumbs just until moistened.
- Grease the bottom and sides of a 4 or 5 qt crock pot. Spoon the batter into the bottom of the crock pot and spread out evenly. Place the diced apples over the batter evenly.
- In a medium size bowl, whisk together the orange juice, honey, melted butter , remaining sugar and cinnamon. Pour over the apples.
- Place a clean kitchen towel over the opening of the crock pot, place the lid on. This keeps condensation from the lid from going into the crock pot. Set the crock pot on high and cook 2 to 3 hours until apples are tender.
- Serve warm.

Want to try you crockpot apple cake but in the receip
You have cook on high but in the comments you said low. Which one is it.
Thanks
Sharon
Hi Sharon, The crock pot setting is high, but all crock pots are different , if you feel yours runs a little on the hot side, cook it on low, check it after 2 and a half hours, if it needs more time add a half hour to it and check again.
have you tried this in the oven? if so, what temperature and and how long? thanks.
Angela I’ve never made it in the oven, if you give it a try that way come back and let me know how it went!
I made it I crockpot for 2 1/2 hours. This was definitely too long on high as the bottom burnt so I would suggest cooking it on low or drastically reducing cooking time. May check after 1 1/2 hours if sticking to high. The fresh orange juice gives a wonderful flavour and I added chopped peacan nuts to the cake mix which gave it a delicious crunch
Cathy I’m happy you made it and loved it, unfortunately crock pots are all different. I’m sorry that yours burned and definitely make it on low heat the next time you make it.
Can you tell me how many servings this makes? Thank you in advance!
You got that one right Diana? It serves 10.
Sorry, just saw it serves 10. Have you every tried doubling the recipe?
Hi Diana, no I haven’t tried doubling it. If i did, i’d probably change the heat setting to low though. Let me know if you do it!
Have you ever made this with other fruit? Plums? Peaches? Do you think it would be too mushy?
I typically don’t leave comments, but today I will! I prepared the ingredients in the morning and let everything sit in the crockpot until about 5 when I got home from work. It cooked for 3 hours. My boyfriend and I just got finished trying it. I have got to tell you how insanely delicious this is. We love it. A must for fall time. Thanks for the recipe.
Thank you so much Tina for coming back to tell me you made it!! I’m so happy you both loved it!
This sounds delish – I’m wondering about substituting maple syrup for honey. Maple syrup is thinner though – do you think this will affect the outcome?
Hi Caroline, I think it would be alright to switch maple syrup out for honey. It would give it a great flavor. if you try it come back and let me know!
Hi again, I made it with maple syrup instead of honey and it added a wonderful subtle maple flavour. Great recipe! Definitely a keeper!
Caroline
I just made this. What is it? I’m looking at a crock full of soup. Towel didn’t do anything.
Walter it’s a pudding cake so there is suppose to be some liquid at the bottom of the crock pot when you scoop out the cake. Did the cake portion rise up with the liquid and apples under the cake?
Some? I had liquid level with the top of the apples. Not just a bottom layer of liquid. Pudding grew nicely.
Gosh Walter, I can’t even imagine why that would happen!
All I have is whole wheat flour! You think this would be ok? Thanks!!
Hi Kristen, I’ve never used whole wheat in baking in place of all purpose but here’s a link that will help you with that…http://www.bhg.com/advice/food/baking/can-i-substitute-whole-wheat-flour-for-all-purpose-flour-when-baking/
Being that it was 102 yesterday, baking was out, but this lovely dessert worked perfectly!! I added nutmeg and next time I will use maple syrup instead of the honey. It was divine last night, but I just had some cold from the fridge with my coffee…sublime. Someone else asked about using different fruit, and I think it would be amazing with plums or peaches, but with those softer fruits, I would add the fruit 1/2 way thru cooking. Also, adding the pecans (from another comment) or walnuts would be tasty or topping with pralined nuts would be great!!
Thank you Nora for coming back to tell me you made it! Thank you for your suggestions as well! Always nice to know you adapt a recipe!
2 hours and the apples were over cooked.. The batter could have been a little sweeter.. Also had some orange juice not absorbed so I think maybe cut back on that as well.
Thanks for replying Tracy, all crock pots are different your comment will help other people too.
As I live alone is this suitable for freezing? I’m always on the lookout for freezable recipes.
Pauline I really don’t know, this didn’t last long enough for anything to be leftover. I’d say if you make it, try freezing a couple small single size portions to see if that would work and share what’s left in the crock pot.
I have a combination pressure cooker/slow cooker. The lid locks in place. Any suggestions on how to deal with the towel to address the extra moisture?
Alice, is there a way to not lock it and just lay the lid on top? Or maybe taking the lid off altogether and just putting the towel over?
Anyone try this with a gluten free flour? I have a friend with celiac disease, and want to be able to make food she can safely eat.
Elaine, I haven’t had anybody say they have yet. But keep checking the comments, hopefully someone will.
Found this on Pinterest and knew I had to try it. I made it today and it was everything I’d hoped it would be! It’s sooo tasty! I followed the directions exactly, except I used granny smith apples. The orange juice set it right off. Definitely one of my favorite apple desserts.
Wonderful Larissa! Thanks for coming back to tell me!
Planning on making this tomorrow morning, I think I need to double it to feed a crowd, do you think it would fit and would it still rise? Thanks!
Nataushe, if you double it the cook time in the crock pot will be longing. Let me know how it went.
Made this a few weeks ago and it was so yummy. Making it again tomorrow for Thanksgiving crowd. Was glad to see comment posted about assembling ahead and turning on later. First time around, just made it for the family and when eating e leftovers, we would warm each serving. Think it’ll be great a la mode too.
Oh yes it would Latha!
