I have loved Lima Beans since I was a kid. Especially the large Ford Hook Limas. I’ve never eaten them any other way but smothered in butter until now. Creamed Lima Beans is an over the top amazing way to serve limas as a side dish. The cream sauce the limas are nestled in is made using a roux with sauteed onions and garlic powder added for flavor. The sour cream and brown sugar add a smooth creamy texture kicking this side dish up to company-worthy or holiday side dish.
I didn’t think about this until after I had made and devoured them but adding a little crumbled bacon to the top before serving would add a little texture and flavor to this already amazing recipe. We’re going to make Creamed Lima Beans together so let’s gather the ingredients.
Creamed Lima Beans Ingredients:
- 10-ounce package large( Ford Hook) frozen lima beans
- 2 Tablespoons chopped onion
- Sprinkle of garlic powder
- 1 Tablespoon butter
- 1 Tablespoon all purpose flour
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 -2 Tablespoons brown sugar, depending on your taste
- 1/2 cup sour cream
We’re going to start Creamed Lima Beans by cooking the frozen lima beans according to the package directions, draining them and setting them aside. Next, place the butter and onions in a skillet, cook the onions until they are tender. Add the flour, salt, and pepper to the pan. Mix the ingredients together until they are well blended. Slowly add the milk and brown sugar to the pan, stirring until the ingredients are well incorporated and the mixture heats up to bubbly.
Stir in the sour cream and drained lima beans. Continue cooking the mixture until the limas are heated through. Add garlic powder ( a sprinkle) to your taste and stir it into the mixture.
Creamed Lima Beans are smooth creamy and delicious, definitely a keeper here and it’s “what’s for dinner” at our house!
