Ever wanted to try your very own chocolate icing recipe?
You’re not alone. Learning how to make chocolate frosting is something so many of us want to do. I used to be the one going to Pinterest to try to figure it out, but then when the time comes….well, life gets busy! Let’s face it: how often do you go to look things up on Pinterest just to run to the store and grab the fastest thing off the shelf?
I want to make sure we stop that today! Learning how to make your own chocolate frosting is so much easier than you think!
Why should you keep a chocolate icing recipe handy instead of simply buying a jar from the store?
I think that chocolate frosting is just as important to making a delicious cake as the cake recipe itself.
Actually, I may even say that a chocolate frosting recipe is more important than the cake recipe.
That’s right!
We often try to find the perfect cake recipe, just to put store-made icing on the cake. But if you want to really wow people at a birthday or another party, it’s the frosting or icing that will grab their attention!
(Trust me. As amazing as this small chocolate cake recipe is, people always want to know about the frosting!)
Is learning how to make your own chocolate frosting actually easy?
You bet it is! I’m definitely not for false advertising. How many times do we go to Pinterest to try to look up “easy ________ recipes”, just for there to be complicated ingredients that we have to go on some crazy scavenger hunt at the store to find?! (Or we used to before Amazon. Now I just use Amazon Prime to go on my crazy scavenger hunts, LOL!)
But when I say that this is one of the easiest chocolate frosting recipes to make, I mean it. It usually only takes me about 10 minutes to whip this incredible chocolate icing together.
On top of that, the chocolate frosting flavor is beyond excellent. The texture is smooth and soft. It melts in your mouth in the most incredible way.
Just be warned: everyone and their neighbor is going to ask you for this recipe.
Just how much frosting does this chocolate frosting recipe make?
This recipe we have here is designed to make two cups of frosting. I love the recipe this way because it is just enough to frost a 13×9 inch cake.
Of course, you can always cut this recipe in half if you are making a 9-inch cake. Win-win situation!
One thing to note though:
If you decide to make a layer cake, I would recommend to either make one and a half batches or to double the recipe. You want enough chocolate frosting to frost the inside layer, the sides, and the top.
The secret ingredient to this chocolate icing recipe…
There is one secret ingredient to the recipe.
Okay, it is not secret at all, but the secretive part is it is what makes the flavor richer than any other chocolate frosting you have had in the past!
This is the ingredient that will make people wonder: What is different about this recipe compared to other chocolate frosting recipes?
To add the special touch to this recipe, you want to make sure to find really good unsweetened cocoa when making the chocolate frosting. (Click that cocoa link if you want to avoid that in-the-store scavenger hunt we were just talking about! Again, I want to make this as easy as possible for you!)
You want the chocolate flavor to be rich and amazing. Homemade Chocolate Frosting has the richest chocolate flavor!
Anything else I need to know about this recipe before I begin?
Nope! It’s literally that easy. Unless you need to know the obvious: the chocolate frosting literally glides across the surface of the cake. You’re going to be obsessed with this recipe- you’ll never want to go back!
You are going to love how simple this chocolate frosting is to make. Why buy prepackaged when you can make homemade? You will be the hit of any party and will be able to surprise people when you are able to tell them that the chocolate frosting was made from scratch. Make sure you pin below for later so you can share it with anyone who asks how your chocolate frosting was so delicious. Enjoy!

Great recipe, used it for my cupcakes last week and everyone loved the frosting!
I’ve been searching for a chocolate frosting recipe that doesn’t taste fudgy or have that weird tang. This one is it! It’s smooth and chocolate-y! My 7 year old who hates frosting said, “That frosting was delicious!”
Thank you Amanda
Thank you for this amazing recipe!
My kids have a cake sale at school tomorrow and I used this recipe and it’s delicious.
I love the smooth, rich consistency of the frosting and the lovely shine. I’ve always been reluctant to use butter in a frosting as the taste of the butter can be quite overpowering but this isn’t the case in this recipe.
Thank you Riann
Hi
So amazing post here we found, I like it and appreciated your works.
Thanx for your kind info.
Thank you!
Salted or unsalted butter?
Unsalted Michaela.
Delicious!
Thank you Brianna
This may have been my mistake by letting the coca and butter mix cool down too much but my frosting was very thick and not smooth or shiny at all. Also I didn’t read the I blog and did not have enough frosting for my two PC layer cakes. Having said that the frosting was very good I will try it again.
Thank you Susan
i loved it!!! it’s just the perfect touch for my chocolate cake.
Thanks for sharing your recipe
Thank you Iris
No need to look any further. It’s Grrrrrrrreat. Wonderful chocolate frosting.
Thank you.
How many cupcakes will this frost?
It frosts a 13×9 inch cake. It just depends on how much frosting you’re going to use to frost each cupcake. If you’re going to pipe the frosting on the cupcakes , I think that would use more frosting than just spreading the frosting on top of the cup cakes. I’d make a batch and a half of frosting just to be sure you have enough. You will average 24 – 36 cupcakes from a cake batter that would be made in a 13×9 inch cake pan.
absolutely love this frosting, was so yummy for the batch of cupcakes I made, thanks for sharing
really yummy
Thank you!
This is the best frosting, first time I made I used coconut milk, wow just the right coconut Flav. And alot of choc
.
Thank you Lou Ann
Does this have to be refrigerated or can I frost cupcakes and keep them at room temperature?
No you don’t have to put them in the fridge, the frosting holds up very well.
I just made this. Thought about dumping it and starting over but the flavor is fine so I will put it on my cake.
When you add the melted butter and the chocolate powder if forms a very thick, hard paste. When you add the milk and sugar, and mix it, you end up with little black dots of chocolate in the frosting. I beat the dickens out of it to try to get the dots to incorporate, and it got better, but it still has little black dots. If you make this recipe, just use soft butter.
I’m sorry Nancy I have no clue why that would have happened to your frosting.
The only way there would be dots and clumping is your heat was too high on your stovetop. It burned the sugar and chocolate try turning the heat down a bit.
Thank you for the advice on the chocolate frosting Rach, it’ll be very helpful to people wanting to make it!
Same thing happened to me. Second batch was outstanding!!!!! What I learned was my heat was too high and it slightly burned, hence the small black dots. I didn’t notice until I was mixing the powder in. I had my stove on low. The second time I set my stove eye between low and off and pulled it from the eye after I quickly mixed the coco in. I think the variations in different stovetop temps could be the culprit lol. It was sooo delicious and fast to make. My family loved them!
Awesome!! Enjoy Sharman!
I’m thinking your heat may have been too high for the butter. If you try again just melt the butter on low to med heat and use a small whisk to mix.
Same thing happened to me, to fix this I just heated it up again and stirred it then put it back in the bowl and mixed with an electric mixer at middle speed. When I was done there were hardly any tiny chocolate bits and it is quite delicious. I added some almond extract as well. Pretty sure my problem wasn’t the temperature but the fact that it took a while to get the paste out of the pan. Very yummy recipe Mary, thanks!
try sifting the cocoa powder
If that happens, add a tiny bit more butter – about a teaspoonful – and stir well as it melts. It should start to thin out. Last time I made this frosting, I had to add about 2 more teaspoons of butter and stirred well – then it was fine.
