Ever wanted to try your very own chocolate icing recipe?
You’re not alone. Learning how to make chocolate frosting is something so many of us want to do. I used to be the one going to Pinterest to try to figure it out, but then when the time comes….well, life gets busy! Let’s face it: how often do you go to look things up on Pinterest just to run to the store and grab the fastest thing off the shelf?
I want to make sure we stop that today! Learning how to make your own chocolate frosting is so much easier than you think!
Why should you keep a chocolate icing recipe handy instead of simply buying a jar from the store?
I think that chocolate frosting is just as important to making a delicious cake as the cake recipe itself.
Actually, I may even say that a chocolate frosting recipe is more important than the cake recipe.
That’s right!
We often try to find the perfect cake recipe, just to put store-made icing on the cake. But if you want to really wow people at a birthday or another party, it’s the frosting or icing that will grab their attention!
(Trust me. As amazing as this small chocolate cake recipe is, people always want to know about the frosting!)
Is learning how to make your own chocolate frosting actually easy?
You bet it is! I’m definitely not for false advertising. How many times do we go to Pinterest to try to look up “easy ________ recipes”, just for there to be complicated ingredients that we have to go on some crazy scavenger hunt at the store to find?! (Or we used to before Amazon. Now I just use Amazon Prime to go on my crazy scavenger hunts, LOL!)
But when I say that this is one of the easiest chocolate frosting recipes to make, I mean it. It usually only takes me about 10 minutes to whip this incredible chocolate icing together.
On top of that, the chocolate frosting flavor is beyond excellent. The texture is smooth and soft. It melts in your mouth in the most incredible way.
Just be warned: everyone and their neighbor is going to ask you for this recipe.
Just how much frosting does this chocolate frosting recipe make?
This recipe we have here is designed to make two cups of frosting. I love the recipe this way because it is just enough to frost a 13×9 inch cake.
Of course, you can always cut this recipe in half if you are making a 9-inch cake. Win-win situation!
One thing to note though:
If you decide to make a layer cake, I would recommend to either make one and a half batches or to double the recipe. You want enough chocolate frosting to frost the inside layer, the sides, and the top.
The secret ingredient to this chocolate icing recipe…
There is one secret ingredient to the recipe.
Okay, it is not secret at all, but the secretive part is it is what makes the flavor richer than any other chocolate frosting you have had in the past!
This is the ingredient that will make people wonder: What is different about this recipe compared to other chocolate frosting recipes?
To add the special touch to this recipe, you want to make sure to find really good unsweetened cocoa when making the chocolate frosting. (Click that cocoa link if you want to avoid that in-the-store scavenger hunt we were just talking about! Again, I want to make this as easy as possible for you!)
You want the chocolate flavor to be rich and amazing. Homemade Chocolate Frosting has the richest chocolate flavor!
Anything else I need to know about this recipe before I begin?
Nope! It’s literally that easy. Unless you need to know the obvious: the chocolate frosting literally glides across the surface of the cake. You’re going to be obsessed with this recipe- you’ll never want to go back!
You are going to love how simple this chocolate frosting is to make. Why buy prepackaged when you can make homemade? You will be the hit of any party and will be able to surprise people when you are able to tell them that the chocolate frosting was made from scratch. Make sure you pin below for later so you can share it with anyone who asks how your chocolate frosting was so delicious. Enjoy!

Your soooo welcome Winny! Thank you for taking the time to come back and comment!
Oh my goodness! I’m not exaggerating, I taste tested it and started hootin’ and hollerin’! BEST. CHOCOLATE. FROSTING. Bar none! I wanted a smoother consistency so I did 1/2 cup of butter rather than a 1/3, but other than that no tweaks! Usually the frosting is meant to accentuate the cake, but in this case, the cake would just be in the way lol. Thanks for sharing this amazing recipe, definitely going straight to the favorites! 🙂
LOL!!! I LOVE YOU KATE!! That is so awesome, thank you for coming back to tell me, seriously you made my day!
Wonderful Melissa, I hope you enjoy it for many years sweetie!
I thought it was an awesome recipe. It used simple ingredients, had wonderful flavor, easy cleanup. And it didn’t require 10 lbs of butter like a lot of frosting recipes do. Thank you so much. -Patrick
Thank you Patrick! And thank you for taking the time to come back and comment!
Fantastic Patrick!
FYI, don’t be me and get the cheapest cocoa there is otherwise it tastes like you’re eating straight cocoa powder. Yuck. Once I bought quality ingredients, it was great.
Wonderful Tiffanee!
I just made your chocolate frosting… all I can say is OMG! Best chocolate fudge icing I’ve ever tasted. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you Louise!
Wonderfully indulgent and convenient for when I don’t want to wait for the butter to soften in order to make butter cream. It was easy and so smooth!
It’s such a wonderful recipe Amanda, I’m so glad you made and loved it!
Can you use almond/coconut milk in place of dairy milk? Last time I made this recipe I used whipping cream in place of milk, it was FANTASTIC and rich but I only have almond/coconut milk this time.
I don’t know for sure Whitney because I’ve never used almond or coconut milk but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work.Let me know your results!
I have just made this chocolate frosting, exactly as you said, and it was wonderful! My husband and children have asked for more every time. Thank you so much for the recipe!
Wonderful Nmz! Thank you for coming back to tell me, I really appreciate it.
This is very easy and very good. Glad I tried it.
Wonderful Trish, thank you for taking the time to comeback and comment, I appreciate it!
Hi Bunny!
I used to buy frosting that was WAY too sweet so I set out to look for a good recipe and you did not disappoint! I’ve made your recipe a few times now and I absolutely love it! It’s smooth and chocolatey and just right when it comes to sweetness. Both my mom, who loves sugar, and my friends, who eat very little sugar enjoy it. I’m definitely keeping this recipe around!
Lots of love from the Netherlands
Wonderful KNS!! Thank you so much for taking the time to come back and comment. I really appreciate it. Give your mom and friends a hug for me!
Hi I tried your recipe and it is good but however I don’t think I did it right when I mixed the butte and cocoa it got to clumpy it didn’t get creamer Al but I let it sit to cool a bit anyways and then proceeded with the rest of the ingredients it still didn’t look anything like yours but it still looks like frosting but a bit clumpy what did I do wrong
Mary maybe your powdered sugar was a little clumpy? Next time try sifting the powdered sugar to get the lumps out first and then proceed with the recipe.
Wonderful recipe! Creamy, easy to make & so yummy! Thanks for sharing!
Wonderful CeeCee thank you for taking the time to come and to tell me, I appreciate you!

Geraldine if you look in the recipe categories you’ll find lots of cake recipes.
I did frosting for the first time and your chocolate frosting cream was a super hit. Thanks.
Do you hv receipe for butter cream frosting as well? TIA..
Hi Lavanya, unfortunately I don’t have a buttercream recipe on my blog yet.
Would this frosting also work with malva pudding
Malva Pudding is a South African dessert that is spongy much like a cake, no this recipe for homemade chocolate pudding isn’t anything like Malva Pudding.
Looks Delish! bunny please reply! tastes great! yum!
Thank you Lacey!
This is random, but have you ever used coconut (Silk) not canned kind? I am going to try it right now…wish me luck. I will also try your regular milk recipe too. 🙂
I’ve never done that Ana but if you do, please come back and tell me, it would be very helpful for anyone else that would like to use it!
Hey Bunny, I loved the recipe and am gonna try it today, but I’m running short of cocoa powder. Is it fine if I replace half of the cocoa with melted dark chocolate???
I’ve never done that Susan, I’d wait till you get more cocoa, I wouldn’t want you to waste any ingredients.
I’d tried the recipe with the cocoa and it turned out osm. It had a watery consistency and I just poured it inside and on top of the cake. It made the cake moist and heavenly. Thanks a lot Bunny. I’m also gonna try your choco chip cookies today.
Wonderful Susan!
