Ever wanted to try your very own chocolate icing recipe?
You’re not alone. Learning how to make chocolate frosting is something so many of us want to do. I used to be the one going to Pinterest to try to figure it out, but then when the time comes….well, life gets busy! Let’s face it: how often do you go to look things up on Pinterest just to run to the store and grab the fastest thing off the shelf?
I want to make sure we stop that today! Learning how to make your own chocolate frosting is so much easier than you think!
Why should you keep a chocolate icing recipe handy instead of simply buying a jar from the store?
I think that chocolate frosting is just as important to making a delicious cake as the cake recipe itself.
Actually, I may even say that a chocolate frosting recipe is more important than the cake recipe.
We often try to find the perfect cake recipe, just to put store-made icing on the cake. But if you want to really wow people at a birthday or another party, it’s the frosting or icing that will grab their attention!
(Trust me. As amazing as this small chocolate cake recipe is, people always want to know about the frosting!)
Is learning how to make your own chocolate frosting actually easy?
You bet it is! I’m definitely not for false advertising. How many times do we go to Pinterest to try to look up “easy ________ recipes”, just for there to be complicated ingredients that we have to go on some crazy scavenger hunt at the store to find?! (Or we used to before Amazon. Now I just use Amazon Prime to go on my crazy scavenger hunts, LOL!)
But when I say that this is one of the easiest chocolate frosting recipes to make, I mean it. It usually only takes me about 10 minutes to whip this incredible chocolate icing together.
On top of that, the chocolate frosting flavor is beyond excellent. The texture is smooth and soft. It melts in your mouth in the most incredible way.
Just be warned: everyone and their neighbor is going to ask you for this recipe.
Just how much frosting does this chocolate frosting recipe make?
This recipe we have here is designed to make two cups of frosting. I love the recipe this way because it is just enough to frost a 13×9 inch cake.
Of course, you can always cut this recipe in half if you are making a 9-inch cake. Win-win situation!
One thing to note though:
If you decide to make a layer cake, I would recommend to either make one and a half batches or to double the recipe. You want enough chocolate frosting to frost the inside layer, the sides, and the top.
The secret ingredient to this chocolate icing recipe…
There is one secret ingredient to the recipe.
Okay, it is not secret at all, but the secretive part is it is what makes the flavor richer than any other chocolate frosting you have had in the past!
This is the ingredient that will make people wonder: What is different about this recipe compared to other chocolate frosting recipes?
To add the special touch to this recipe, you want to make sure to find really good unsweetened cocoa when making the chocolate frosting. (Click that cocoa link if you want to avoid that in-the-store scavenger hunt we were just talking about! Again, I want to make this as easy as possible for you!)
You want the chocolate flavor to be rich and amazing. Homemade Chocolate Frosting has the richest chocolate flavor!
Anything else I need to know about this recipe before I begin?
Nope! It’s literally that easy. Unless you need to know the obvious: the chocolate frosting literally glides across the surface of the cake. You’re going to be obsessed with this recipe- you’ll never want to go back!
You are going to love how simple this chocolate frosting is to make. Why buy prepackaged when you can make homemade? You will be the hit of any party and will be able to surprise people when you are able to tell them that the chocolate frosting was made from scratch. Make sure you pin below for later so you can share it with anyone who asks how your chocolate frosting was so delicious. Enjoy!

Super easy to put together and tastes delicious! I love that you can tweak the dark chocolate/milk chocolate taste depending on how much milk you add.
I just made this and it turned out great! I’ll be sure to save this recipe for future use.
Awesome recipe!!! First time making chocolate frosting from scratch and it came out absolutely phenomenal!
This icing test better than what you can buy in the store. As others have suggested please use low heat so as not to burn the coco powder.
Delicious chocolate frosting! The recipe was easy to follow and it turned out great! Not to cocao-y if you know what I mean.
I know EXACTLY what you mean, so glad the homemade chocolate frosting turned out well!
Super easy to make but I had to add additional powdered sugar bc it was not the sweet icing I was wanting. It’s perfectly easy to make and I will make it again.
I use “almond” extract instead of vanilla and then put in refrigerator. My family demands this. Promise, you’re love iti😉
This is the best icing ever I mad it for my cousin and it turn out amazing. Plus I suck at cakes all the time so I saw this and mad it and everyone loved it!
This frosting is delicious! However, even thought i followed the recipe exactly as its written, mine also came out very liquidy, not a solid frosting. Its more of a chocolate glaze than a frosting unfortunately
Mine also came out a bit runny/icing consistency at first. I was using it to frost cookie bars, so icing wouldn’t work. Admittedly, I did not follow the recipe even almost exactly lol. I used almond milk instead of regular because that’s what I keep on hand and margarine instead of butter because I was making a bulk recipe for a party. Also, I didn’t have powdered sugar on hand, so I made my own using a magic bullet. With all those substitutions, I just added about a cup and a half more powdered sugar and refrigerated for 20 minutes before spreading. It came out delicious and had none of the artificial sweetness of store-bought buttercream!
So glad to hear it ended up being delicious!
Just made this icing. Very simple and delicious- thank goodness!! Because my son’s birthday cake was over whipped and undercooked. Desperately needed a great icing to pick up the slack. I confess that I did indeed eat more then a spoonful. I added a pinch of sea salt to balance the sweetness (personal preference. Thank you!
I love hearing how people alter the homemade chocolate frosting recipe for personal preferences, that is one of the best things about homemade! Glad you enjoyed it!
This was simple and delicious. Very creamy.
Thanks so much Marge! So glad you enjoyed the chocolate frosting
First time I’ve ever made homemade icing and it’s the best icing I have ever tasted! How can it be this easy? I will NEVER buy icing at the store again. I used softened salted butter, cocoa powder and it came out fluffy and beautiful. Kind of hard to not eat it straight from the bowl LOL. Thank you for posting this recipe!
Ana, I am so glad you enjoyed the homemade chocolate frosting recipe! It is hard to turn back to regular frosting after LOL!
Delicious ! Best recipe I’ve used so far.
I am so glad that you enjoyed the chocolate frosting! Hard to go back once you can make it homemade!
Hi I would like to try this for father’s day. Never made homemade frosting before, so please forgive my ignorance. Do I need to use unsweetened cocoa powder or more like a sweet ground chocolate? It says to use a sweetened cocoa powder but I wanted to check! Thanks!
Hi Bunny , do you have a yellow layer cake recipe? Thank you!
Dara all I have in a yellow cake recipe is a single nine inch cake. I’m sorry! Here’s the 9 inch yellow cake recipe if you want to try and double the recipe. I’ve never doubled it though.https://bunnyswarmoven.net/yellow-sour-cream-cake-with-fudge-frosting/
So I made this today with Ghirardelli’s sweet cocoa powder and it came out gritty, I’m guessing because of the sugar granules in the cocoa powder. Can you help me figure out what I did wrong?
Dominique I used unsweetened cocoa powder, the Hershey brand. It’s for baking. I’m going to guess the sugar in the cocoa powder is what made it gritty. Use the unsweetened cocoa powder if you try it again.
SO GOOD 😍
I made this recipe for my brother’s birthday cake and it turned out very good and it’s easy to make
I would definitely make this again👍👍
Wonderful Avery! Thank you for taking the time to come back and tell me, I appreciate you!

I’m so happy you loved it Nicole, thank you for coming back to comment sweetie, I appreciate you!
Hi Mary! Thank you for your recipe! I’d like to try it and I have a couple questions in preparation to do so. First can I use my unsweetened cacao powder that I love dearly lol and should the butter be salted or not? Thank you in advance!
Yes Lorens definitely use your unsweetened cocoa powder. I always use salted butter. Lety me know what you think of it Lorens, I’d love to know.
