The house smelled wonderful when that pork started cooking! I knew I didn’t have to worry about it for the rest of the day so I concentrated on making the sandwich rolls. I have a Potato Bread Recipe that you can find here that’s out of this world good and decided to try my hand at making sandwich rolls with it. I wanted big ole rolls to make a nice size sandwich, a manly sandwich. The potato bread recipe makes 2 loaves of bread so I figured I’d make the rolls and a loaf of bread, somewhere along the line I started thinking …well I’m making dough ,so why not try making doughnuts with it. Have I mentioned I’ve never made yeast doughnuts? The one and only time I tried to make cake doughnuts I burned them while frying them, I haven’t tried them since. So why was I in the mood to torture myself with another doughnut recipe…I don’t know, like I said I was feeling ambitious I guess, if the doughnuts bombed I still had the rolls. I mixed up the bread dough, this dough is very sticky.
This is what it looked like with 5 cups of flour added to it. The recipe calls for 6 cups of flour but I used that last cup to knead it. It’ll still be sticky after that 1 cup is added but that’s good! You want it that way. I greased a bowl and put the dough in it, covered it and let it rise. After it rose, I cut it in half and started cutting hunks off it for the rolls, making them all the same size. I got 9 sandwich size rolls out of it, you could make them smaller if you’d like. I put the rolls on a greased sheet pan and let them rise. Then I started on the doughnuts with the other half of the dough. I rolled it out to about 1/2 an inch thick then I used a glass to cut them out with and the cap off a Kraft Dressing bottle to make the hole in the middle, pretty fancy equipment I’ve got huh!! LOL!! I put them on a greased cookie sheet and let them rise.
Sandwich rolls after they rose up. I know they look big but trust me they were just the right size.
Doughnuts after they rose up. So all that’s left to do is bake the rolls and fry the doughnuts. The bread goes into the oven at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes. While it’s in the oven I start frying the doughnuts. This was the part I wasn’t looking forward too. I got the oil heated up and burned the first one, then lowered the tempt added more oil and started frying. They turned out very very well! I put a simple glaze of powdered sugar and milk on them, they were sooooo soft and good!
The sandwich rolls came out of the oven and I brushed them with butter, they were ready to have they’re picture taken!
I made homemade french fries with the pulled pork.
